About our matcha

Ride the matcha wave, with Romi – and experience the zensation

You’ve probably heard about the wave effect that drinking matcha creates? It’s a feeling of ‘calm alertness’ that stimulates and stabilises. That’s why many Zen Buddhist monks would drink it before a long meditation session. (Ever seen a Japanese Zen garden and the wavey patterns in the sand?)

So, what is the wave feeling?

Matcha is high in caffeine and in L-theanine (an amino acid regulating the uptake of caffeine into your body). This creates a calm and long lasting 'wave' of energy rather than a quick hit.

Matcha quality really matters here. Matcha that’s grown properly and shaded long enough has a higher L-theanine level.

And the wave taste?

Romi’s high quality matcha has a smooth and layered taste profile. The flavours are like undulating waves that rise, fall and potentially crescendo into quite a different finishing taste.

And the wave preparation?

Properly made matcha made properly is whisked from side to side in an 'M' or 'W'
motion, like a wave shape.

Finding The Perfect Matcha For The Perfect Wave

We test and grade a lot of matcha. (Yes, a LOT.)

Because not all matcha is the same.

Most matcha in the UK is from Uji, in Japan, and it’s great. But we go ever further to bring you the very best, and scour the country far and wide. We reach out to producers we’ve discovered who create inspiring and unique blends. We visit the farms – those with a heritage, that use established techniques and whose single-origin varieties are loved by Japanese consumers.

We also like nothing more than to go off the beaten track, in quest of something really, really special – such as our matcha from Yame, with its natty nutty taste.
